Non parlo Italiano! I don’t speak Italian!

‘It’s great my child is learning another language, but I don’t know how to speak it, so how can I possibly help them?”

We understand parents are busy people and not everyone can afford outside tutors and language schools. But that doesn’t mean you can’t help at all! Here is a short list of how you can get involved and help your child learn.

  • Use it at home!
Now that you know some basic phrases in Italian, use them! Instead of saying “hello”, say “Ciao”, instead of counting in English, count in Italian. The more they use it, the more they will remember it.
  • Watch movies in Italian (with English subtitles)
Websites like Netflix, or even some DVDs come with an Italian language option. Listening to the words helps with learning pronunciation. Try to use a movie that is familiar to them as they begin to learn to avoid discouragement. By using English subtitles, they are also practising their literacy skills in reading!
  • Be Positive!
Learning a language is hard. Your encouragement can go a long way! If you can help show them the value in learning a new language, they will see the importance too!
